Nonprofit Talent Pipeline

We believe nonprofits serve a critical role in our communities, and they deserve top talent.

In partnership with Community Wealth Partners and supported by Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, Causewave recently conducted research to identify trends for attracting, developing, and retaining talent in the Western NY region.

We started with a national scan to understand ways the sector is addressing issues around talent. Local interviews helped us uncover efforts that already exist in Western NY and shed light on what’s missing. Shifting to employee and employer input, two surveys helped explore trends impacting current nonprofit staff in Western NY while focus groups with career starters and sector switchers illuminated opinions from prospects outside of the sector. All these inputs helped frame the challenges and opportunities regional nonprofits face for attracting, developing and retaining talent.

Whether our findings are new to you or validate your experiences as a leader in the nonprofit or philanthropic sector, we see many opportunities for this work to spark new ideas for workforce development efforts. Every organization - for-profit and nonprofit - has been forced to meet the moment and respond to COVID, the latest racial reckoning, and the Great Resignation. The time for reinvention is upon us. For the sector to thrive, we must support the incredible dedicated staff in the WNY nonprofit sector by paying them competitive salaries, reducing burnout, creating pathways for advancement, and developing positive work environments. Causewave believes we can influence this together as individuals, entities (nonprofits and foundations) and the sector as a whole, and having timely information and data to drive that change is the first step.

Webinar: Solutions for Strengthening The Nonprofit Sector’s Talent Pipeline

In early 2023, Causewave discussed the topic of nonprofit talent attraction, development and retention as an issue we can influence together as individuals, entities (nonprofits and foundations) and the sector as a whole. In this webinar, we released and activated research conducted last year supported by Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation and in partnership with Community Wealth Partners. Following our presentation, we had a conversation with Rusty Stahl, Founder and CEO of Fund the People, a national effort to encourage and support funders and nonprofits to integrate talent investing into their grantmaking and fundraising practices.

Following the webinar nonprofits interested in discussing a specific challenge or opportunity with Causewave team members and HR experts were invited to sign up for a free virtual session for up to 2 hours. We conducted 12 sessions where HR experts provided quick wins in the form of information, resources and referrals that helped organizations move forward with key talent related tasks and questions.
